Comfort Orientated Massage

Comfort orientated massage can be given to people living with cancer or other long-term and chronic conditions – and in most cases can be given prior to, during and after treatment. You may require, or want, to speak to your GP or consultant to ask him if massage is appropriate. As Reiki is a non-invasive therapy this may be more appropriate at times.
For a massage, all that is required is that adjustments are made to the sessions to suit each person’s energy level that day, the impact of any side effects from the treatment they are receiving and taking advice from their consultant oncologist or medical specialist – thus ensuring that special care is taken to make the massage therapy appropriate – as well as an enjoyable and beneficial experience for the recipient.

Having completed a post graduate course in giving massage to cancer patients, and as such having an understanding of the basic physiology of cancer and metastasis, I am able to provide massage treatments by making the necessary changes depending on:

  • Any medical or surgical procedures which have been carried out
  • The stage of chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments
  • The risk of lymphedema
In every case a thorough consultation would be taken prior to the first session as well as an update before each subsequent session to modify the massage given to suit the current needs of the individual. These same considerations, and being aware of the modifications which may be required and why, can be applied to many other conditions, including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, stroke, cerebral palsy and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
